Hi all, as some of you will be aware I have just restored a 1974 mini 1000. However when we took it for MOT and the registration no and VIN number were entered onto the computer system it told us that the car was first used in 1971.
Would i be able to get this classified as tax exempt, obviously the car was manufactured pre 74.......so any ideas?

Strange one that! Mine was a 1974 mini 1000 and obviously wasn't exempt. How come they say yours in 1971? Cars were being registered long before 1974 so it should have been registered when it was first made, unless its not the same shell or something. A 1971 vehicle would be exempt under the "historic vehicle" licence but I think you would have to get the log book changed somehow! A case for DVLA I suppose.

Yeah it is strange, the only thing we can think of is that it was made and then stored or used in the factory/garage before it was sold to the owner i brought it from. On the origional log book it doesn't state New at 1st registration, just date of sale, but i am the 2nd owner. I have contacted the heritage motor company and they are sending me an official date of manurfacture certificate. If this states that the car was built before jan 73 then it is tax exempt. This only came up on the new MOT system, so next time yours gets done check the chassis number when it goes in the system and this is where it came up stating mine was 1st used in 1971.

Hopoefully you should be OK for tax exemption then. As for mine - I wrote it off about 4 weeks ago now so I won't be buying tax for it ever again anyway! Actually waiting for a refund on what was left when I crashed it as well.

Oh dear....sorry to hear that. Is it worth buying it back and selling the parts or is it totaly wrecked?

It is a "category B" write off - which aparently means the whole car has to be crushed by a licenced company. I did ask if I could buy back the bootlid and wheels but they are in essex at the removal/scrapper company, so its not worth the effort as they'll probably want a fair bit. Onwards and upwards as they say! Just waiting for the insurance cheque now.

What a shame. My insurance company were thinking of writing my other mini a k plate with only 35K on the clock just for a shunt in the rear. thankfuly they changed thier minds. Are you getting or have you go another mini?

Been thinking about another one but its got to be just "right", no rush though as Pat has enough project cars to be getting on with!
