Hello all,
just a moan to get something of my chest.
Why is it that non mini lovers who own minis want to sell them for silly money?
i Had a look at one over weekend cos withdrawel symptons are setting in real bad now.
it was an 83 mayfair all original bodywork and panels, which is good for a mini of that age, 46k on the clock, a bundle of history with it.
ummm i hear you say to yourselfs. but one wing is in need of replacement, not due to rust (might be thinking about it) but not hoew a wing should look like (£50ish for new one) It will need a new a-panel(£20ish), and all the surface rust will need sorting out. then an mot will need doing(£40ish).
So before you even brought it you will need to spend just over £100 to make it look straight (then you got to prime and paint (how much is that £££££))
this mini had no MOT or tax so i offered £250 which i still think is overpriced for a bit of scrap metal with wheels on (no offence to minis).
i basically got told to get stuffed cos they wanted what they paid for it 8 months previous, which was £400, but it had 6 months mot and i presume some tax as well.
justbloody annoying that people think that all minis are worth there weight in gold.
am i been silly or am i just looking at them with a realistic eye?

prices ARE strong at the moment. £400 doesnt sound so bad to me tbh, hell, an standard 1275 ENGINE ONLY has just sold on ebay for £350!
Dont forget people will demand more anyway in the lead up to spring and of course the notorius pre-london2brighton rush.

dont get me wrong, my thoughts are yes the mk1, mk2, mk3, mk4 poss, vans, pickups, and now clubmans(due to vtec) are worth every penny that peeps want for them, even the limited editions/special edtions.
but for your run of the mill mayfair, city, cityE etc, just another car really.
tell you truth my family car 10 years old only worth £450 in tiptop condition.
my point - why pay £400 for run of mill mini at 23 years old with no mot and tax, when i can buy my family car with mot & tax for £450.
dont get me wrong love the mini too bits (all models(well apart from from bini(which i can just about tolerate))).
ITS THE WITHDRAWEL SYMPTONS
i wanna mini and am a tight fisted arms shorter than depth of pocket type of geezere hehe

the woman who owned the above mini was not a mini driver, her boys were when i arrived they were in their golfing gear with clubs waiting for pops to take them in a merc slk of something, hence my non-mini lovers point.

Glad to see your enjoying yourself tonight mate:p . Now i am with you on a few things, mini's are starting to get that stigma about them. Where one person buys a mini no tax or mot and pays over the odds then someone else does it and another and another (EBAY:mad: ). Next thing you know because people have seen this that is where the price now sticks at bad for us when buying yes, but when you come to sell you your car you can get a good price for it. So in some ways it is not all bad. I can't comment on the car you went and saw as it may have been great just didn't have an MOT for some reason. If it was straight and honest it may well have been worth it. I have seen some mebers that thought they had a great deal nice paintwork. Until they notice maybe it isn't so great and there is filler everywher and someone has welded straight on top of rust whithout cutting it out. I think we are getting to the point where it will be cheaper to soldier on and get your car sorted properly than going from one to another. I know it costs money especially the dreaded tinworm but what can you do. At least this way you know what you are dealing with if you have owned the car for a while. Whereas if you get a new one who nows what hidden pleasures await you. Anyway mate i hope you find what you are looking for and have great fun in it:D .

Unfortunately minis are slowly dissapearing now as they are no longer in production, MLM have moved from a mini specialist garage to a retro car specialist to widen their marketas they have felt 1st hand the drop in minis on the road. This means people have started charging more for the little cars as they are getting rarer and this filter all the way down to mayfairs with dodgy wings! Unfortunately people who arent even 'mini people' realise this and whack a silly price on their mini at selling time. These days it seems you have to either suck it up and pay up, or just keep looking until a bargain turns up. As Faz says there is the flip-side that I can look at my van as an investment too, I bought it for a reasonable price, am doing a fair bit of work to it and when it's done it will be worth a bundle more should I ever need the cash (I hope I dont!!). Oh, and never give up easily on haggling the price down - thats how I managed to get the van, it took abaout a week of hassling the guy!

I noticed how much the price of minis had gone up when I brought Baby Roo last May. For the £800 I paid for her I could buy my 2lt Vauxhall Omega R reg family car nearly!
But as the others have said they are becoming rarer by the day. The attention you get now from driving a mini is much more as they are so uncommon. Back when I had my first mini in 1991(ish) it cost £100 to buy, Pat resprayed it etc etc and by the time I sold it we got £500 for it - that seeming to be an expensive car for someone! Back then they were two to a penny, parts were so easy to pick up and even places like Halfords had common things like hoses to fit. Now you have to order bits in or travel further afield for parts. But that is the beauty of the mini and hopefully us lot will help to keep the legend alive.

its an 998, which is fine with me keeps me insuarance down hehe.
Not sure what i got planned for it yet, first things first sort out front end and any mechanical faults if any for mot.
couple of ideas going round me head to personalize it.
main one being do i take back to original mayfair trim asits all there apart the cooper bits. that have been added.
or respray in a colour of my choice.
or take it to a auto signage place and get it bodywrapped with my own design or something. (bodywrapped means ummm think of the sky tv vans/ also a couple of binis in brighton have had it done)(i put this cos i got asked what it was by mechanic)
decisions i hate them hehe

I dont know is the answer lol
the options are endless for that sort of thing.
the one i keep thinking about, cos of mingie is just the union jack covering the whole car.
i know its been done before, with spray(graffiti0 i dont know cant think of the name they give it now hehe.
but depends on price to weather i do it or not.
mechanicals and bodywork first before any thing else hehe

problem with body wraping and custom spray jobs is that its a mini so it will definately get rusty to some extent. its hard enough to get a resprayed wing or bootlid to match let alone that. would look pretty cool tho and maybe if its not a daily driver would be practical.
