I AM ABOUT TO CUT OUT AND WELD BACK IN REPLACEMENT INNER FOOTWELL WINGS .CAN ANYONE RECOMEND WHAT JOINT TO USE ?
I WAS THINKING OF LAP JOINTING IT AS ITS IN A PLACE THAT DOSNT REALLY GET SEEN AND WONT NEED TO BE COVERED IN FILLER.
ANY IDEAS FAZ, PAT, DARREN ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS ANY INSIDER KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE MYSTICAL WORLD OF WELDING ?
ANY TIPS OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECIEVED.IM THINKING OF STARTING THIS TOMORROW. :o

awesome link Dave
I need to practice my welding but havent got a welder yet  the hardest thing for me when welding the go kart and welding the tow bar onto Darren Ds car was that I could not see the metal AT ALL ! All I could see was the welding arc so I had to stop look and then weld and guess where I was supposed to be welding - this might have been down to the visor I was using though ?
I like the quote on the web site:-

Thats why I havent really read the Haynes manuals !

Really helpful posts on this one !
If you butt weld you need to be a better welder and metal fitter than lapp welding. Lapp welding with a jodeled seam ! is going to be far stronger than either a good butt or a poor butt welded seam.
The jodeller is a tool that puts a crease in one panel or the other so that they overlap and can be welded from both sides.
It may not look 'as original' but lapp is by far the strongest.

COOL
THATS WHAT I DID WITHOUT A JODDLED CREASE SLAPPED LOADS OF UNDER SEAL OVER IT AND YOUD NEVER KNOW IT HAD BEEN DONE.
I HAVE FOUND OUT A FEW USEFULL TIPS ON MY WELDING ADVENTURES :-
1. GAS WELDING IS A LOT MORE EASIER AND EFFECIVE THAN USING GASLESS WIRE.:)
2.THE LITTLE DISPOSEABLE ARGON GAS BOTTLES THAT YOU CAN BUY FROM HALFORDS DO NOT LAST VERY LONG AT ALL.:(
3. APPARENTLY YOU CAN USE PUB CO2 GAS BUT I HAVE YET TO TRY THIS.

YES PUB CO2 GAS DOES WORK :D THE STUFF THEY PUT I FIZZY DRINKS !
I HAD TO GO TO ALL ENDS OF THE EARTH TO FIND A FITTING THAT WOULD FIT THE CO2 GAS BOTTLE . IN THE END AFTER BEING SENT TO PLUMBERS SHOPS, GAS FITTERS SHOPS, BUILDERS MERCHANTS AND EVERYWHERE ELSE I FINALLY GOT A NUT THAT WAS UNF THREAD FROM THE NUT & BOLT STORE
IT WAS A BIT LOOSE BUT WORKS :).
I WELDED (BIT OF A CRAP WELD NOT USING THE GAS ) THE GAS TAP FITTING THAT I GOT FROM HALFORDS TO THE NUT AND USED A SNUG FITTING RUBBER WASHER TO MAKE A GAS TIGHT SEAL TO THE BOTTLE.
HEY PRESTO IT WORKS !

you can use pub C02 but you need argon in the gas to assist the arc. Sounds like you could do with a decent mask. Photosensitive masks are down to less than £40. I bought one and was amazed at the difference it made to my welding:eek:.

SO IS THE ARGON GAS LIKE A CONDUCTOR WHICH HELPS WITH THE ELECTRIC
CURRENT ON CONTACT ?
AND THE CO2 IS LIKE A SHEILD FROM OXYGEN ?
I FIND THAT THE WELD IS MUCH MUCH STRONGER WHEN USING CO2 THAN WITHOUT .
ONE OF THESE  MASKS IS ON MY SHOPPING LIST BUT IVE GOT TO GO OUT AND EARN SOME PENNIES AND STOP MUCKING ABOUT AT HOME WITH MY MIG

Both CO2 and argon are inert gases that can act as a shield to prevent oxidisation at the point of the actual weld taking place, (which generates that 'orrible black snot - which obviously weakens the weld) - CO2 on its own should be fine for steel but pub gas is rather impure compared to the 'proper' stuff, though some people say it works ok....
I know what you mean about those piddly little disposable cylinders - i also found you can't get adequate flow from them for proper shielding, however, Cliffords do sell, and refill, reasonable sized cylinders.

THINK ILL INVEST IN SOME PROPER GAS NEXT YEAR WHEN I CAN AFFORD IT.
