Huzzah, I have found an unsecured wireless Internet connection at the flat which in non-geek means I can 'borrow' someone elses Internet until I manage to get my own connected :D

Instead of having a normal modem to connect to the Internet you can buy a 'wireless modem' which will transmit an internet connection over radio waves. You can then install the relevant magic box in your PC to recieve the transmission and be connected to the Internet without the need for wires between your PC and the phone socket, handy if you want to share an Internet connection between 2 or more PC's in the same house or if you want the PC in a remote location to the nearest phone socket and don't want miles of extension cable.

The transmitters however are fairly powerful and I have managed to connect to one somewhere, probably the flat below or even next door! This is good for me as we don't have a phone line connected yet, let alone the Internet!

check the network name and find out what make router it is, then seek the IP the routers config interface sits on and have a look at the DHCP client table, use a port scanner on other IP's listed and see if his PC is also insecure. If it is have a good rummage around by double slashing his IP followed by 'c$' (windows own admin sharen ame) :)
