hey guys, my 998 is really finding the wet weather rough, my mechanic says the arm in the dizzy is worn or something and that the vacuum advance unit is broken. but he says in order to fix this i need some protection for my dizzy otherwise itll be a waste of money lol

now i think this is the correct vacuum advance unit

can anyone confirm that? :)

and as for protection for the dizzy i just read in another thread about a spray at halfords? but on minispares all ive found so far is

now the rubber dizzy cap wont actualy work cos i just have a normal one, with the leads outa the top. but i cant find one for that. and does the L shaped electrical cover actually work?

many thanks,

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

is the vac unit borked or just the hose? It is unusual for the unit to break but not uncommon for the plastic-y hose and/or its rubber end connectors to split/perish.

An old trick to keep the dizzy dry is to cut the fingertips off a marigold and place it over the dizzy with a plug lead out each finger and then zip-tie the openings shut! The weather shields are good and on a budget/in a pinch an ice-cream tub lid (or similar) zip tied to the back the grille, infront of the dizzy will help.

If you are having wet-weather trouble and are not sure of how old the 'basic replaceables' are I would spend a few quid on a 'mini service' - plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm. This is an easy job you can do yourself and makes all the difference this time of year - my car was spluttering in some light rain earlier this year, I changed all of the above for new and it hasn't missed a beat since, even when I tried to drown it in a HUGE puddle at ~30Mph, in torrential rain, with no dizzy protection the other weekend

hey,
yeah the mechanic said its actually the unit, not sure what one i need though.
id heard about the marigold lol but ive heard mixed stuff about it... and yeah the rotor arm is worn, but there no point replacing it just yet if it doesnt have any wet weather protection. although it does have a mouse mat infront of the dizzy atm lol leads, plugs and cap are almost new. so that why im after the cover and vac unit, then i can get the arm replaced etc all done at once.
