Hi,

I have an 1988 Mini Mayfair. Which has been running fine. Yesterday I went out in the ol girl and she was fine. I came home put her in the garage and then thought dam I forgot my the red bull.

I turned the ignition but just got the 2 red red lights on my dash (which is usual so I'm told) and a kinda tick sound . I tried the old girl a few more time and each turn just produces the same.

I lifted the bonnet and turned the key again. The ticking was coming from a 5 pin relay on the drivers side of the engine bay I put my ear to it and turned the ignition again and could hear the electricity pulsing through it. I was thinking maybe this is the problem. Being a relay I tapped it a few times with an ickle bar but no change. I took it off to look for some markings but its so dirty I couldn't make out he inscriptions or a part number. I cleaned it up with a moist scouring pad but only got the following details 86 87A 87 on the top and on the side 33398E 1788 3239766 12V

I put the relay back in just a mo again and have no power what so ever no ticking or from the relay no lights nothing. My thought is that the relay has gone so no circuit can be made. However this is just an assumption. If it had of worked my next guess was the starter motor had gone. If so luckily i have a new (recon) in my garage.

If anyone could shed some light on this i would be very grateful as I use this mini daily and I'm really stuck with out it.

Just had a new battery on it a few months ago. Just looking for a multimeter to test it.

alternator? Once you've checked the battery voltage then I guess start looking at relays and fuses... and then the starter motor

Well I had another relay, so i changed that. Put the multimeter on the battery and it was dead !! Had an old battery with some juice in so chucked it on and the cart turned over. Just in the process of charging both batteries and then she if she starts.

A while ago I had a month of bad starting where the battery kept dying . It turned out that as I had a couple of lights out on the dash and the car wasn't making a complete circuit so flattening the battery. Soon as I replaced them the car ran fine and battery didn't go flat.

So either I must have another light out or there is an inherent underlying electrical fault. Checked the fuses and they are all OK.

In all fairness thou the engine is 22 years old and its all original parts. So not bad going.
