Hi There everyone,

Well I finally managed to get one of my dream cars! In this case a 1994 mini cooper 1.3. The other being a landy - bit of a contrast here, but the same indicator stalks :p

Needs a little bit of work - mostly some rust spots. So I'll be hassling all you old hands for some advice :)

Hi and welcome to Brighton Mini Club message forum. Tell us a bit more about yourself and your little car. I have a 1974 mini 1000, sporting a lovely new respray - and a 1993 Land Rover Discovery. However, they have very different indicator stalks - being on opposite sides of the wheel for one thing!

Thanks for the kind welcome :)

As to the mini specs:

1994 mini cooper 1.3i red with white vinyl trimming
13" rims - although at some stage someone must have powder coated them in gold and that has chipped/peeled off - so looks pretty ugly at the moment.
Interior is mostly original and thankfully the previous owners always used car seat covers.
Little bit of work needed on the door handles / window winders etc.
Quite a few rust spots - nothing bigger than a 2 pound coin though and funny enough nothing in the traditional mini-rust-spot-places and as soon as I can afford to I will have them all removed and the car resprayed.

Engine is good and doesnt appear to have been modified at all apart from an uprated exhaust pipe.

Im 99.5% sure the mini has the same indicator stalk as my 1996 hardtop landy did. Although now that i've sold the landy I cant check it and you have sown the seeds of doubt...

Was your landy a discovery or defender? My disco is a 1993 2.5TDi, maybe yours was different as it was a later model than mine - same with the mini, mine is 1974 so is really basic - not even got hazards!

I took the mini out for a bit of a drive with my kids (read 3 mini sossi-dogs) yesterday and I'm convinced the switchgear is the same.

I had a 1996 defender tdi hardtop (the basic spec one before the 300 series engine) and I'm sure the indicators , bright lights and windscreen wiper controls etc are the same.

The mini is a rover 1994 one so quite probable they have the same.

A question: the gear knob bit (apart from being really ugly + strange shape) rattles like crazy - seems to be the only rattle in the car at the moment.
Is it a big job to change it? And where would I find something as mundane as a gearknob to purchase?

Do all mini's have such long travel in the gearchange? Feels like im driving a really small landy :P

hehe no - they are really miniature daschounds. And the three of them seem to prefer riding around in a mini rather than a landy.

The mini is really just perfect for them - they can climb in without much assistance and their basket is a perfect fit for the back seat :D

r they just pets or do u show them ??? its only that i once showed borzois and judged shows just curious thats all:) :)

They are "just" pets :) Although i think they are the best looking examples of sossis anywhere, but I *may* be biased :D

Terab

Hehe yeah they do. Actually ive got a really nice basket for them that takes up the entire rear seat - they love it coz they can easily look outside the car - which is something they struggled to do in the landy.

Lots of people still stop and stare though :P

In reply to the indicator stalks thingy, my friends defender is different to my disco and my mini, but is probably the same as yours. As said my mini is so old. As for the gearknob I brought one at L2B last year (before I even bought my car!) and just screwed it on. I presume they are all the same, just a simple thread that you undo, but what do I know i'm only a mere woman!!!!!!

Anyway tell us a bit more about yourself so we have more than just our love of minis to talk about when you come down to Brighton (oh and your doggys)

Well a disco isnt actually a landy ya know... :p Anyhow i dug out a photo of my old landy and the indicator, horn etc are identical. No wonder I feel so at home in Anny.

Erm where to start. The first thing that you will notice about me is probably my accent, although a lot of people havent - so either i'm losing it or its not as bad as I think. Although british I went to school and uni in South Africa - but would come back here on trips with parents etc. So in SA I sounded english to them , but here I sound SA to them :p After that been working all over the place. Here, the states for some months (thank goodness i didnt pick up too many words from them), france, Belgium. Just moved here permanently after my year in Belgium (which was great by the way).
I used to be married at one stage but we decided to part company while we were still friends. No animosity at all there , and we are still good friends, just wasnt working as a married couple as were just too different / wanted different things.

So I have custody of my sossis and my clumsy kitty. And recently bought Anny as a toy / something to pamper. Although not a mechanic I'm fairly technical so the idea was to learn about the mini enough so I can fix her myself - something to keep me occupied after work.

So there ya go I just poured out my lifes story to a bunch of mini loving maniacs :) At least at the worst I'll be attacked with a can of anti-rust and a tiny wheel spanner :D

I'm 32 (er nearly 33 *cry*) now if you must know. Im in IT - I know thats all encompasing but seems like I have to be master of all fields in my current work. Thats actually why I dont like cars with many electrics..

I just looked at this and the above post - looks like I'm signing up for some sort of wierd dating site "Singles with mini addiction.com" or something :p

I think there is a 'lonely hearts' thing in the back of mini mag!

Dogs are awesome - my Mum has a Tibetan Terrier, it's crazy. I want a dog but i'm renting a flat and the landlord says no, plus i'm not really about enough to care for one properly.

I'm also in IT and like you expected to know all!! It's nice to have the variety but sometimes people do expect a bit much!

Terab
20-06-2006, 09:26 AM
<- runs off to buy mini-mag (hehe just kidding)

Yeah dogs are a big commitment. Here in the UK where most landlords wont allow pets it can be really hard to find acceptable places to stay. Things were much more pet orientated when I was in Europe. Im currently paying waaaay too much money to rent a place that I only got coz my dogs like it.

IT is such a funny business. In no other profession are you expected to know everything, instead you can specialize in one area. In IT you are expected to specialize and still know all about everything else too...

Well if you think IT is difficult to work in you should try childcare! Not only do you have to work with 30 snotty nosed, smelly bottomed monsters all day, but you have to keep a cheery disposition, tolerate abusive parents, and bitches colleagues. But then you have to come home, be a domestic goddess, sex machine(joke) and interested mother to your own brood!!!!!!! Give me a nice office job anyday!!!!

No I love my job really, and my life - especially as I can drive my mini and escape from the lot of them in my own private space - that is until Pat (my husband) wants to take over driving like he does every time we go out with the mini club. We've got a dog named Spicey, she's a mongrol and over 14 years old. We love her dearly but they are such a burden, especially when you want to go away for mini weekends etc. She's almost blind now so doesn't like being in unfamiliar surroundings, therefore the only other place she goes than home is to stay with my sister in law. Luckily our eldest is 16 now and likes to stay home alone so we can still escape.

You say you're almost 33, that is pretty young. In fact I would say that we have quite a few peeps in the club about your age. I'm slightly older (37) and we have a few very young ones at about 19ish and a few older (but wiser eh Barb) members. So we are a pretty good mix.

Look forward to meeting you on Sunday hopefully.
