i dont know what the pass rate is or what mine is running at, but with no cat and a homemade exhaust im not sure it looks good

An old trick is to take it out on the motorway for a run at 70MPh for 20 mins or so, this will clear out a bit of old cack so it runs 'cleaner' for a short while. Also try turning the fuel down on the carb - IMPORTANT - remember how many turns you have turned it and in what direction so you can set it back to how it was!! After that it sounds like you need to get it to a rolling road to set it up properly.

ive just phoned a diffrent mot place to the one im going to tommoro, and they said they whould do an emmissions test by sight only (eg. any black smoke etc) im guessing most other places do the same :)

make sure it is not a leaky fuel pipe to the carb as this makes the car smell like a zippo lighter too

ok il check that too.....after welding up the exhaust and serverly pugging it, the smell has almost gone....i will adjust the fuel and do a nice long motorway run tommoro... the mot looks more like a wed jobby now unless things start going right for me :(

Mine almost failed my mot! I had it rolling roaded and the CO was a steady 1.6%
First MOT two weeks later, 2.6%, another week later, 3.9%.
I hope it's better next time. Probalem is I can't get on the MOT as it's got no MOT, reckon sticking in first/second and giving it some revs will help on the way there? I might see if they can run a quick emmisions test first to see what it's like.
How much difference does the temprature of the engine make?

i went to 3 places in burgess hill today and they all have diffrent methods of doing the emmissions
1, just a visual check (because the car has no cat) eg if it is smokey or coughs etc then they might actually put in on the testing decvice, otherwise they will let it go
2, they would put it on the device and if it is too rich, they would turn the fuel down until it reaches a good standard
3, they would do the full test, but said it is rare for a mini to fail, because there is a large allowance (they expect the minis to be quite high)
although i havent actualy had the test, plugging the exhaust made the biggest diffrence (less petroly smell and i had a blackspot when the engine was at high revs which was sorted after all the leaks were plugged)
i also gave 1st and 2nd gears a good ragging but this increased the pertoly smell and also made the engine really hot and the idol speed higher...i know the engine has to be heated up, but i think cooking it makes it worse...
ur best bet if u are worried about failing on emissions (and the rest of the car is good) is to take it round to mot centres before u actually pay to have one and confirm which methods they use and how strict they are...
if u want to shop arounf the centres before hand, phone the centre and ask then if u can drop a mini round to check on a few things... this way if u were stopped u almost have a valid excuse and u can play the "i didnt know" card... this is what i do anyway because getting caught without tax and mot at my age will result in me loosing my lisence... its also worth putting/ keeping the old tax disk in the window because it dosent look so obvious at first glance (i passed 3 police cars today and none of then gave me a second look

Yeah, I've got tax and everything. I get the mots done at a friends garage now. I'm just not sure if they can do emissions tests seperatly from the mot or if it's all wired up together.
If i get them to note down the reg number and just put mot repairs or soemthing on the job card it's legit, I've also checked and my insurance covers me as well.
