I've had my 1994 cooper for a few weeks now and i can't seem to get the front spots to work. Are they supposed to come on when you have full beam on? I've looked at the bulbs abd they look brand new. took the grille off the other day to look at the wiring and looks fine from what i can see - any suggestions anyone?
cheers

The spot lights should come on when you flash or switch main beam on. On our mini, there is a relay mounted near the brake servo under the bonnet that controls them. There is also a group of inline fuses mounted just behind the air filter, tucked up by the bulk head. It may be easier to trace the wires through from the lamps themselves to find out the correct relay/fuse. After checking fuse and relay condition and still nothing, you'll have to progress to checking voltages :)

I had the shock of driving at night for the first time last week (only had Tommy a month and have been on holiday half that time) !

Would people recommend the halogen conversion kits that are available (about £25 for pair) or getting two or four wipac beams / fogs that bolt onto the front (about £60 including fixing kits and wiring) ?

Id probably need to get someone to fit them as im a complete novice

if u get a good set of bulbs for ur original lights, they will give off a bit more light (unless u have sealed beams, then u cant get access to the bulbs)... halogens give off more light then standard, but dont change the appearance of the car... a set of spotlights will change the cars looks and probably gain the most light (depends on if u like the look of spot lights and if u prefer 2 or 4spots?)

if u choose a set of spots, u should also look at ur original headlamps to see if there is a problem

thanks bernadillo ... think I will get whole Halogen kit as its a lot cheaper than wipac spots (I think the lamps are sealed)

good choice...u heard of "angel eyes" before....when ive got a bit of money...im thinking of getting a set of them...i dont think they are any brighter then the originals, but as they arnt a sealed beam u can get powerful bulbs....they also look cool with the side lights on

hi yes I was looking at some angel eyes on ebay I think they were £35 for the pair.. the sidelight is a sort of ring of lights a bit like the lights on the BMW mini (?) (can have them in blue or red but these arent cough cough .. legal)

i suppose thing to do is have a pair of MOT legal lights to put in justto pass the MOT then put Angel Eyes in for the next 11 months  I'm not suggesting anyone breaks the law (terms and conditions apply - shares can go up but usually go down when I buy them...)

angel eye bolt on spots instead of wipacs ?

I have a more immediate problem... indicator on one side on constantly rather than blinking on the dash... this happened last week then was ok again... thought it was bulb on front indicator but when i went to look and took the two screws off that hold the clear plastic front on Icouldnt remove the bulb .. didnt seem to unscrew (maybe rusted) but it looks like I might have to remove the plastic bulb housing.. problem is two of the three screws holding it in are so rusty/corroded I cannot unscrew them... do i need to or does the bulb come out somehow? The filament looked ok in the bulb ... anyhow I gave up and put the cover back on and low and behold the indicator was working again !?!?!

Any help from the more mini savy is welcome ...

if it continues to work ok, then i would leave it....if it continues, the bulbs are bayonett style and need to be pushed in before unscrewing...its unusual for then to be rusty as they have a cover... if a new bulb wont sort it...there is a flasher unit under the dashboard on the drivers side...which may need cleaning or renewing (only a couple of quid)...

if its only happening on one side it is probably the bulb....but if it works ok most of the time....then dont go looking for trouble

i have a few bulbs and i think i have a whole new indicator unit i dont need....(ive probably got a spare flasher lying around as well)... if u want...il have a look at the next tuesday meet if its still a prob

thanks

thought it might be a bayonet fitting but didnt want to break it finding out... bulb looked ok and is working again now after i fiddled with it so it might be a loose connection..

like i said im a mini novice but a fast learner ;)
