OK chaps, how do I go about stopping rust from spreading. I have a few little scabs here and there and would like to stop them spreading so the van isnt a rusty heap by the time I can afford a proper re-spray!

My best guess is: take back area to clean rust free metal, prime, paint. Is that rust treatment stuff worth it? Cant remember what it's called

Hammerite do a rust kit which costs about £7 and is great i used it on mine. You get a gel and a primer the gel turns the rust black and then the primer has rust treatments in it as well. Obviously take the rust back as far as you can then follow the instructions on the pack. Alternativly take the rust back as far as you can go get a rust treater on there spray prime and paint. Your never gonna stop rust though mate unless you get a stainless steel shell:p .

unfortunatly your fighting nature so you'll never win! But yes the rust stuff does work when the surface is properly prepared along with good priming, paint and the waxoyl stuff etc.

The biggest causes of rust are water traps in the bodywork that never seem to dry, and wet mud that none of us clean off after a wet day, and of course road salt etc. The only other way to avoid rust it to make a body out of fibreglass lol

Cheers guys, I just wanna stop the van turning into a heap before I can get the bodywork done, if I leave the current scabs 'open' and untreated they will spread a whole lot faster and turn into big holes and I don't really want to start replacing panels I don't have to if it can be helped. Whoda thought a car this small could eat so much cash!

darren, biggest problem u and me have is that the damn panels for vans and estates are no longer available, we have to make sure the dont rust more-so!

Luckily the rear side panels and floors are solid, it's just the usual door bottoms, wing tops and rear valence that are bubbling

i'm quite lucky, my shell was stripped to bare metal and had the Ziebart treatment about 7 years ago. There are a few spots that need attenting too but thankfully nothing structural. Have a look at the pics of it in the gallery and you'll see how clean it is :D

let the rust stuff dry really well before priming or the paint bubbles
